A Trio of Confit Pots

VG0052

Description

Details

An appealing trio of rustic confit pots, one of several we have in our collection.

“Confit” is French for “to preserve”, and these neat little pots were used for preserving food over the winter. Mustard-coloured pots like this one were used for meat, a handy colour coding system! The meat was put in the pots, sealed, and stored, usually in a cool larder but sometimes buried underground.

These delightful confit pots date from the 19th century and come from Provence. They were much-used kitchen items, hence the slight nibbles around the top of the pot - however this simply adds to their character and sense of history.

Confit pots look particularly good grouped together.

French, 19th century.
