Railway Milk Churn

A rare conical steel milk churn, used for transporting milk via the railways.

As a piece of British social history, this is a fascinating item. Milk was transported from the farm or dairy in standard-sized containers (churns) to the station. The brass nameplate identified the owner (in this case, the iconic Cow and Gate), and a piece of paper (not included!) tied to the handle would indicate whether the churn was full. Our churn is also stamped “Ilminster Farmers”, making it a South Western churn.

Dating from the 1930s, the milk churn has been beautifully restored to show its rich colour. An attractive and unusual accessory for the garden or patio.

English, circa 1930.

Size height 88cm, circumference 50cm
