Very Large Greek Pithoi Urn
Description
These stunning white washed urns were used throughout Greece in the 19th century for storing or shipping wine, olive oil, cheese, honey and seeds.
They were made using a potter's’ wheel on Islands such as Rhodes, Chios and Sifnos and then bought by ships captains who distributed them around the eastern Mediterranean.
This large example is about 4 feet high and when filled would have been so heavy that they would have to be craned on and off ships using a harness strapped around the the three handles.
We have 4 of these urns in stock and everyone is a slightly different size and shape and has its own individual patina and markings making each one totally original.
They make great statement pieces both inside the home and in the garden.
