Description

SKU: VG10704

A wonderfully large example of an 18th century Biot jar. “Biot” is a style of pottery that dates back to the 16th century, named for the town where they originated, near Cannes in the south of France.

“Jarres de Biot” (biot jars) are hand made from a mixture of red and grey clay. The jars are distinctive for their shape and also for the drips of glaze tumbling down them which are known as “mother-in-laws’ tears”. The jars were used to preserve olives or store flour.

This is a particularly attractive biot jar, in lovely warm shades and in good condition.
