French cast iron urns with a lovely blue-grey finish.
These 19th century cast iron urns have an extremely attractive patina, giving them a delicate pale blue appearance.
Urns became a popular garden ornament in the 17th and 18th century Europe, losing their original classical function as funerary items and becoming purely decorative. And of course, once the Victorians adopted them, they became extremely decorative indeed! This pair is French, and of a more restrained style than many British urns of the period, and are made from cast iron, the material of choice for many 19th century urns.
Urns are often used as decorative garden ornaments rather than planters; however this pair has nicely wide necks, so would make attractive plant pots as well as architectural features.
French, late 19th century.
