Cupid Boy
Taken from a mid-19th century antique cast by the Coalbrookdale Foundry, this classic lead garden ornament was produced by H. Crowther of London. It depicts a young boy holding a scalloped shell that forms a bird bath, with a small lead bird perched on the rim.
Antique bird baths such as this were popular features in 19th-century gardens. This example was cast in the 1960s and retains the character and modelling of the original design.
The figure has good detail, a pleasing natural patina, and is in good watertight condition. It sits on a concrete base, the weight allowing it to stand securely or be set into the garden at its original height.
