Large Biot Jarre

VG10875

Description

Details

This large 18th century Biot Jarre is a very good example of a style of pottery that dates back to the 16th century, named after the town from where it originated which is close to Cannes in the South of France.

"Jarres de Biot" are handmade from a mixture of red and grey clay. They are distinctive for their shape and also for the drips of glaze tumbling down them which are known as "mother-in-laws' tears". They were used to preserve and transport olives or store flour.

This Jarre is in very good condition and would make a very attractive decorative item inside the home or in the garden.
