Compton Floreat Pot

VG10364

Description

Details

A rare Compton Pottery Floreat or Heart Pattern Planter from the early 20th century designed by Mary Seton Watts. It is unusual to find a pot like this where the Floreat lettering and heart-shaped pattern are fully intact as they are on one side with other partially obscured by weathering or minor losses. Considering its age and use this is a very good example of Arts and Crafts pottery at its finest. This pattern planter is illustrated in Archibald Knox and Mary Seton Watts, Modern Celtic Art Garden Pottery, by Veronica Franklin Gould on pages 20 and 38 where it is variously described as the Floreat pot, on account of the inscription around the rim
